Hurricane Beryl Makes Landfall in Texas
Category 4 Storm Brings Devastation to Gulf Coast
Seven People Killed, Hundreds of Thousands Without Power
WEB Hurricane Beryl has made landfall on the Gulf Coast of Texas near Matagorda, the US National Hurricane Center said on Monday. The hurricane's center is about 55 miles south-southwest of Houston and is tracking north at 12 mph.
Beryl is a Category 1 hurricane, with maximum sustained winds of 85 mph. The storm is expected to weaken as it moves inland, but it could still bring heavy rainfall and flooding to parts of Texas.
A Category 4 storm landed on the Texas shore south of Galveston on Sept 8, 1900, swallowing Galveston Island according to the Weather Underground. The storm killed an estimated 8,000 people and caused widespread destruction.
Thunderstorms have killed seven people and left more than half a million homes and businesses without power in south-eastern Texas. Hurricane Beryl is expected to bring additional rainfall to the region, which could lead to further flooding.
Hurricane Beryl was 40 miles southwest of Houston and 45 miles north-northeast of Matagorda near where it had made landfall, according to the National Hurricane Center's 11 a.m. CDT update.
